I do take nutritional supplements, and believe they help. However, this past winter, I ran into an interesting situation, and the surprising solution came in the form of a nasal flush, or nasal irrigation as it&#8217;s often referred to.</p>

<p>It was early winter, and I came down with a cold. I had gone entire winters without getting sick, but this one seemed to get me despite my best efforts to shake it with supplements (Vitamin C, OPC3 and other antioxidants, Elderberry Extract, Aloe, Immune Boosting Herbs, even MMS). After struggling with it for a couple weeks, I caved in, went to the doctors and got put on antibiotics.</p>
<p><em>I usually avoid this at all costs, but life was hectic and I needed a solution. </em></p>
<p>Sure enough, just as my previous experiences have gone, I ended up getting sick again a couple weeks later. Incapable of shaking this one as well, I went back to the docs, and got another round of the antibiotics.</p>
<p>It cleared up whatever was bothering me for the time being, but I knew I had to make changes or I&#8217;d be back a third time before the winter was over. Since I was already supplementing pretty heavily, I decided to take a different approach. I cut back considerably on my supplement intake, started doing a few gentle colon cleanses to get my body back on track, and last tried something I had never done before, at least not as a daily routine&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>I tried a nasal flush.</strong> This flush, also known as nasal irrigation, is a simple, cost friendly technique, that has incredible results. At least for me it did.</p>
<p>The technique is not new, in fact it&#8217;s centuries old. It&#8217;s simple, you use running water through the nostrils to flush out anything that&#8217;s not supposed to be there. The are numerous variations on the theme, but the one I use involves a neti pot. This small teapot-like tool holds a small amount of a saline solution, and uses gravity (as you tilt your head) to run this solution through your sinuses.</p>
<p>The feeling takes a little getting used to. Also, the solution you make up varies the results. I add about a half teaspoon or so of salt depending on the amount of water I use to really dry up the sinuses. You can also add some baking soda to help with the <em>ph</em> balance. Definitely talk to your doctor about the details, or google it if you trust the internet.</p>
<p>The main point is, my allergies have gradually disappeared, my immune system seems to be fully functioning (haven&#8217;t been sick in months), and it hasn&#8217;t hurt the wallet at all. The neti pot runs between $10 and $20, and the salt costs a couple bucks and lasts months. That&#8217;s all the costs involved.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not going to lie, it will seem a little unusual at first, but this is a practice you must consider. I added it to my nightly regiment, right after brushing my teeth, and don&#8217;t think twice about it anymore.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been asked what doctors think about this&#8230;</p>
<p>The last time I was in the doctors office, I ran this buy my doctor. She had told me the nasal flush was a great technique to use and she fully endorsed using it before and after getting on a plane, at nights, and when allergy season is approaching. The logic was that there&#8217;s a lot that gets into your body through the nasal cavity, and salt creates an environment that bacteria and other pathogens can&#8217;t thrive in.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s simple, easy, and cost effective. You can tell it really works because the commercial world is starting to come out with new gadgets and expensive products that do the same things as a simple nasal flush.</p>
<p>Try it out, you might like the results.</p>

Once started, it will continue to grow until steps are  taken to thoroughly dry out the home and eliminate the source of the  moisture. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states  that mold can be recognized by wall and ceiling discoloration and a  musty, earthy odor.</p>
<p>Mold is a naturally existing substance in nature. However,  it can be very harmful to  humans. Airborne mold spores in large quantities  can cause such things as allergic reactions, asthma episodes, infections and  other respiratory problems. Long term continual exposure to mold can  cause nasal or sinus congestion; eye, nose or throat irritation; and  adverse effects to the nervous system.</p>
<p>Though mold poses a threat to everyone, those at that are at the greatest risk are &#8220;infants and children, the elderly,  people with diseases related to compromised immunity, pregnant women,  and those with existing respiratory conditions.&#8221; Anyone falling into  these categories should consult a physician immediately if they are experiencing  health problems.</p>
<p>Here are a couple of steps to apply if your home has been flooded or exposed to water to a large degree.</p>
<p>First,if the humidity outside is lower than indoors, open up the house, opening all the doors and windows to flush out the moist indoor air with the dryer outdoor air. Be sure to monitor the indoor and outdoor humidity. If the humidity ever becomes higher outdoors then indoors (like at night and during rainy/foggy days), be sure to close up  the house.<br />
Clear all moist furniture from the house. They must be thoroughly disinfected and washed before bringing them back into the house.</p>
<p>Promote circulation of cabinets and closets by removing all the drawers and opening the doors.</p>

<p>Find and clean any ducts that may have been under water. This includes air conditioning or a furnace blower. The ducts may contain harmful sediment that will blow into your home. Instead, use fans to help clear the bad air and dry out your house. Couple this with dehumidifiers and window air conditioners to reduce the amount of moisture even more.</p>
<p>Visit your local hardware store to pick up moisture absorbing materials such as silica gel, which you can use to dry areas you can&#8217;t get fans into.If you notice instances of mold, try removing them promptly with these methods&#8230;</p>
<p>Use household cleaners to scrub all walls and wood  furniture, mixing in about 1/4 cup of liquid chlorine bleach with  every gallon of water.</p>
<p>Remove and replace all wall coverings. Wallpaper paste actually harbors mold and can be harmful if ignored.</p>
<p>Disinfectant all rooms more then once to make sure the germs and odors left by the floodwaters have been taken care of.</p>
<p>Note: While cleaning your home, be careful of fumes! Always use rubber gloves and a dust mask.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, drying out your entire home could take weeks. Even though you might think that  your house is safe, mold is a tough enemy, and the  lingering effects of mold could still be present long after you feel your work is done. If still in doubt, contact your health physician to test for effects of mold on the body, and get a professional to test your house.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Sound simple? Sure; but unfortunately, many people don’t wash their hands as often as they should. This means that germs that cause the common cold gather on all kinds of public surfaces that you use during the day. Touching your mouth, nose, or eyes after coming in contact with these surfaces can transmit these germs right into your body. Then it’s up to your immune system to try to fight them off.<span>  </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Regular, proper hand washing with soap and water kills these germs and prevents colds and other illnesses from spreading. And it’s so easy! Just use warm water to lather your hands with soap for 15 to 20 seconds. Then rinse your hands thoroughly under warm running water. Don’t forget to use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door—you don’t want to pick up any new germs.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">About 20% of Americans drink no water, and 42% drink two glasses or less daily. Inadequate water intake causes a decrease in total blood volume, constriction of blood vessels and an increase in blood pressure. Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues. Many people who don&#8217;t drink enough incur excess body fat (reduced ability to metabolize or burn fat), poor muscle tone and size, decreased digestive efficiency and organ function, and experience joint and muscle soreness. Most of these ailments listed are treated by expensive medication or elaborate health practices, when all that is needed is a short walk to the fridge.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">So how much should the average person drink? The schools of thought vary, but on average the typical adult needs almost 100 ounces of water daily. About one-third of this usually comes from the water from the food we eat. This means that most people should drink at least eight eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Note that varying factors, including your health, body weight, how active you are and where you live, will adjust the actual amount.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">When should you pour yourself a glass? Well, don&#8217;t wait until you&#8217;re thirsty to have a drink – you&#8217;re already dehydrated if you feel thirsty. First thing in the morning is a great time because you wake up naturally dehydrated and can help flush out all the toxins that have stored up in your body during the night. Your kidneys will thank you for that. Drinking a glass right before bed has shown to eliminate the urge for a midnight snack (or at least the hunger pangs that cause this). In fact, many people who experience hunger are actually just dehydrated.</p>
